COMMANDS WHEN GUIDING A BLIND SKIER

COMMAND

SITUATION

   
SIT In An Emergency.
   
TURNING RIGHT/LEFT When you are approaching a turn.
   
STRAIGHT AHEAD After the turn is completed.
   
HUMP COMING UP NOW Hump in the trail.
   
DIP COMING UP NOW Dip in the trail.
   
BAD TRACK FOLLOW LEFT/RIGHT SKI When the track is wiped out or covered with snow.
   
STEP RIGHT OR STEP LEFT When skier is out of track to one side or the other.
   
STEEP HILL UP/DOWN When you are approaching a step up or down hill grade.
   
GENTLE HILL UP/DOWN When you are approaching a gentle up or down hill grade.
   
TRACK In the case of passing other skiers it is done on the left side, the guide calls out the command (track). Then move the skier over to the left side and proceed to ski past the the slower skiers. Once an adequate and safe distance (the longer the better) between the skiers has been achived. Issue the command for your skier to move back into their track on the right side. Do not pass while skiing a down hill.
   
WE ARE AT THE BOTTOM When you are at the bottom of the run.
   
  In a long hill down you should inform the skier how the slope is laid out before you start, then follow the skier down to the bottom helping the them along as they go using the above commands with a loud and clear speaking voice.
   
  During uphill teach your skier to do the fish bone or side step.
   
  During hills down  teach the skier to snow plow so they do not accelerate beyond a speed they can safely control.
   
  When a skier falls, teach them how to get up by themselves and allow them time to do so. If the skier can not get up or request help by all means do so.
